San Damiano is also where Clare of Assisi lived for over forty years, founding the order of the Poor Clares in this very convent. Unlike the Basilica of San Francesco, San Damiano remains a quiet, intimate place, little touched by mass tourism despite its historical importance — probably the most authentic stop for anyone seeking a moment of quiet away from the crowds in the centre.
