Agriturismo with children: how to choose the right one

With children, a holiday comes down to the details: where they sleep, where they play, what you eat, what it really costs. An agriturismo can be perfect for a family, but not every one is equally so. Here is what to ask before you book, question by question, with the answers from Agriturismo La Mora, in the countryside of Assisi.

A room or an apartment?

With young children, an independent apartment changes your days: a room for the afternoon nap, a table for snacks, the chance to put the little ones to bed and stay up in the next room. Ask how many people the accommodation really sleeps and how the beds are arranged.

La Mora has five apartments, all independent, with a fully equipped kitchen and private bathroom. For large families there is Bilancia, for up to 8 guests; Sagittario sleeps up to 6; Gemelli, Pesci and Acquario up to 4.

A kitchen of your own

Baby food, warm milk, snacks at impossible hours: a real kitchen is worth more than many services. Check that it is properly equipped, not just a kitchenette, and ask whether breakfast is included in the price or paid separately.

All La Mora's apartments have a fully equipped kitchen. The organic breakfast is served every morning from 8:00 to 9:30, and some direct rates include it.

Where do the children play?

Outdoor space and games are why many families choose the countryside. Ask what there is and what the rules are: a playground they can use, a lawn to run on, something for older children too.

At La Mora the playground, with swings, slides and roundabouts, is always open, under adult supervision. Around it there is a natural-grass five-a-side pitch, the table-tennis table and the farm's horses, to see up close.

The pool: season, hours and rules

If you travel in summer, the pool becomes the centre of the day. Ask in which months it is open, at what times and which rules apply to children: better to know before than to find out at the poolside.

La Mora's pool measures 6×12 metres and is open from 1 May to 28 September, from 9:00 to 19:00. A swim cap is compulsory for children up to age 16: pack one.

Where to stay

Stay 6.8 km from Piazza del Comune

About 14 minutes by car (Google Maps). Five apartments with a kitchen, the playground and the pool in summer.

What do children cost?

Prices for children vary a lot from one place to another: some apply reductions by age band, others charge children like adults. Ask for the exact bands and always state the children's ages when you book.

At La Mora there are reductions for children: from 0 to 2 they are free, from 3 to under 8 the reduction is 50%, from 8 to under 11 it is 30%. State the children's ages when you book. The tourist tax, €3 per person per day for the first 3 days, is not charged for under-12s either.

Cots and services for the little ones

If you are travelling with a baby, ask about a cot before you leave: not every place has one and the cost varies. At La Mora a cot is available on request, for €15 per stay: let us know when you book. Babysitting can also be arranged on request.

And in the evening, where do you eat?

After a day out, you don't always feel like cooking: ask whether there are child-friendly restaurants nearby. Ristorante Carfagna, La Mora's partner restaurant 7.0 km away, offers guests a children's menu at €15 for children aged 3 to 10, agreed according to their needs.

What is there to do nearby?

Location matters as much as the place itself: with children, short journeys are best. From La Mora the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is 2.1 km away, about 3 minutes by car; Piazza del Comune, in the centre of Assisi, 6.8 km, about 14 minutes; Perugia 21.0 km. In our guides you will find what to do in Assisi with children in one or two days, and ideas for a weekend in Umbria.

The questions to ask, in short

  • how many people the accommodation sleeps and how the kitchen is equipped;
  • what there is outdoors for playing, and with what rules;
  • the pool's season, hours and rules;
  • the reductions for children, band by band;
  • whether there is a cot and what it costs;
  • how far the places you want to visit are.
