Marmore Falls with your dog: rules, trails and opening times

A trip to the Marmore Falls, near Terni, is one of the most spectacular days out from Assisi, and you can do it with your dog too. The park has precise regulations, stricter than the rules that apply in towns: here is what they say, which trails to choose and when the water is released, using information from the Falls' official website.

A waterfall built by the Romans

The Marmore Falls began as a Roman project: in 271 BC the consul Manius Curius Dentatus diverted the Velino river towards the Nera to drain the stagnant water from the Rieti plain. The result is a 165-metre drop in three leaps, with a controlled flow: the water runs at full strength only during the release times set in the calendar.

The rules for dogs in the park

According to the park regulations, dogs may enter all shared areas except those marked with a no-entry sign and children's play areas. They must be kept on a lead no longer than 2 metres and must wear a muzzle, whatever the breed: only puppies under six months old are exempt.

This is stricter than the rule in towns, where you only need to carry a muzzle: if your dog is not used to wearing one, let it try it at home in the days before the trip. The ticket page says nothing about tickets for dogs: if in doubt, ask at the entrance.

Which trail to choose

The park has two entrances, at the Belvedere superiore (Marmore) and the Belvedere inferiore (Collestatte Piano), and six trails of varying difficulty:

  • trails 2 and 3, towards the Belvedere inferiore: easy and scenic, with steps and uneven ground;
  • trail 5, at the Belvedere superiore: flat, but without a good view of the falls;
  • trail 1: difficult, with over 600 uneven steps; the iron staircase has a grating that can catch dogs' claws, and the park asks owners to take care;
  • trail 6: outside the park, suitable only for experienced hikers.

The Balcone degli Innamorati can only be visited on a guided tour: the website does not say whether dogs may join, so ask before booking.

The official calendar for November and December 2026 sets out:

  • in November, on Saturdays, Sundays and 2 November, water from 12:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 16:00;

The 2027 calendar has not been published yet, and the website warns that times may change: check it shortly before your trip. When the water is released the noise is loud: if your dog is sensitive to noise, keep it close in the most exposed spots.
