A waterfall built by the Romans
The Marmore Falls began as a Roman project: in 271 BC the consul Manius Curius Dentatus diverted the Velino river towards the Nera to free the Rieti plain from stagnant water. The result is a 165-metre drop in three leaps, which Italy's official tourism portal describes as the highest in Europe.
