The Cascate delle Marmore began as a piece of Roman engineering: the Curiano Ditch, cut in 271 BC to channel the waters of the Velino river into the Nera and drain the marshes of the area. Over the centuries, the result became one of the tallest artificial waterfalls in the world, with a total drop of 165 metres across three successive falls.
The viewpoints
- Belvedere Inferiore — the simplest, near the car park, with the classic view of the falls.
- Belvedere Superiore and the upper trails — take more time and a bit of fitness, but offer views down onto the falls and the valley.
- Grotta di Nettuno and Grotta della Pulce — side paths for those who want to see the falls up close, trail conditions permitting.

When the water flows
The waterfall's flow is regulated: the water runs only during set time slots, decided to balance hydroelectric production with public access. Hours change by season and day of the week — before heading out, it's always worth checking the park's official calendar, so you don't arrive to a dry falls.
